DDS EXPERIMENTERS KITS
Direct
Digital Synthesizer Experimenters Kit using an Analogue Devices
AD9851 DDS chip, which is suitable as an accurate signal generator,
or as a VFO for a RX or TX project. The chip can be directly controlled
by a computer, or by an onboard PIC 16F628 microprocessor. The
DDS output uses a L.P.F. & MAR amplifier for up to +7dBm output.
The EME85 board has connections for an LCD display for frequency
readout, & a control board with rotary encoder for frequency
control. The frequency reference can be either an onboard computer
xtal ( eg 30.000 / 100.000MHz ) oscillator module, or an external
temperature controlled high stability oscillator.
All
DDS Kits are supplied with the AD9851 DDS chip Soldered to the
Board, & a Pre-Programmed PIC 16F628 Chip with the latest
Software Version.
The
EME85 KIT only includes the PC Board with all basic onboard components,
AD9851 DDS chip soldered to the board, & PIC16F628 programmed
with DDS Version 2.10 software. The EME85 KIT does not include
any of the other optional components that are supplied in the
DDS KIT1 & KIT2, or separatelly. The Basic
EME85 Kit with the simple pushbutton hardware will only work with
the older DDS version 2.10 software unless it is upgraded to the
EME159 control board & 4x4 Keypad.

now a new Software version DD_Synth Ver2.2 that was written
to be able to use the same hardware setup as the Sweep Kit &
it no longer supports using the original hardware setup that
used the control board 1.

Kit can be changed to a Sweep Kit by simply buying a replacement
PIC microcontroller PIC16F648ASWP. See the Sweep Kit below.

EME85
KIT
(
Basic DDS Kit ) requires the addition of at least a EC12E rotary encoder,
OSC3 or 4 module, LCD1 display, & a couple momentary contact pushbutton
switches to make a working product. This Kit will only work with the
older Version 2.10 software.
Additional
Software features like direct keypad entry, & frequency memory are
only available when using the EME159 control board, 4x4 Keypad, &
DDS Version 2.20 software.
All
Software settings can be changed in the menu setting screens that are
displayed on the LCD module. The pushbuttons connected to the DDS along
with the rotary encoder are used to change & memorize the settings
into the PIC. No Reprogramming of The PIC with
a computer is required.

The
Knob1 to suit the EC12E encoder is optional & is a high quality
Elna 28mm Knob with a locking collet, & press fit cap.

DDS
SWEEP GENERATOR KIT
Sweep
Generator Kit suitable for aligning & testing equipment. The
Kit uses the Basic EME85 DDS Kit with the addition of a EME159
Control Board & 4x4 Keypad. The Kit uses modified DDS software
to produce a Signal Generator, Sweep Generator function, &
RF Power Meter using the optional RF Power Head Kits.
The
EME159 Control board Kit 3, 45x45mm along with a 4x4 Keypad is
suitable for controlling all functions of the Sweep Gen Kit. Functions
including Frequency tuning, Step Size, Calibrate, Memory, Sweep
Direction, Sweep Start Stop, Sweep speed, Fast Sweep, VFO/Sweep
mode.
Up
to 11 Sweep Generator Memories, start, stop frequency, & sweep
rate can be programmed. Refer to the Sweep
page for more information.
The
Kit comes complete with professionally plated through hole PC
boards with solder masks.
The
Knob1 to suit the EC12E encoder is optional but is included in
the SWEEP KIT1 & is a high quality 28mm Knob with a locking

Although
the Sweep Generator Software has been designed to use a new EME159 control
board & 4x4 Keypad, the DDS Kits 1 & 2 previous
to September 2009 can be upgraded to to a Signal/Sweep Generator
simply by replacing the PIC micro with the replacement PIC16F648ASWP.
All the existing Transceiver functions will be lost, however the software
will recognise that you are using a EME129 control board & 4x3 Keypad.
However, the better option if you are only going to use you DDS Kit
1 or 2 as a signal generator & want to have both the Sweep &
Power meter functions, it is then best to buy the complete SWEEP KIT2
& replace your existing EME129 control board & 4x3 Keypad.
The
EME159 control board has been designed to interconnect the LCD display,
4x4 Keypad & the Power Head board saving lots of time having to
modify the wiring from the standard DDS Kits 1 & 2. All button switch
functions are now handled by the 4x4 Keypad.

The Power
Head is designed to be used in conjunction with the DDS Sweep Generator
Kit, but can also be used with a Multimeter for simple RF Power
measurements. The Kit uses the AD8307 Logarithmic Amplifier that
allows RF measurement from DC to 500MHz. A PIC microprocessor is
used to convert the analogue DC volts to I2C data & clock, to
be read by the Sweep Generator Kit. All calibration data is stored
in the PIC processor.

A
replacement PIC16F648A with Sweep Software will have to be fitted
to the DDS board to suit the New 7GHz Power Head Kit, as it requires
more memory space for the calibration menus. All previous Sweep
Kits will need a replacement if you want to use the new 7GHz Power
Head Kit.
The
7GHz Power Head Kit will require test equipment to align as the
LTC5508 chips have too large a variation for it to be accurate
at all power levels & frequencies with the standard software
calibration.

Accuracy
depends on the test equipment used to calibrate the powerhead.
We were able to calibrate a power head within 0.2dB compared to
a Keithley 3500 RF Power Meter.

CONTROLLER KIT
This Kit has primarily been designed as a PIC Micro controller
& interface for the New HF-DDS Kit, but can be used as a
general purpose Micro controller board using your own software.
The
board allows for interfacing of a 4x4 Keypad, LCD Display, &
various input & Output circuitry using onboard Headers.
The
Kit uses a powerful PIC18F4520, & most Pins are available
on connections around the outside of the chip .
The Microcontroller can easily be programmed using the Microchip
PICKIT2 programmer connected to the IDC2 programming Header
on the board.
What the Basic Kit Includes:
Includes PC Board & all onboard electronic components, &
16 Pin IDC plug/socket & 25cm ribbon cable. The Basic EME150
KIT1 does not include the EME150/CONN Kit, or RS232 Kits as
