This
low cost Receive Only Preamplifier has been designed to be easy
to construct & can be centre frequency tuned for use between
45 & 65MHz, & is suitable for the 50-54MHz
Amateur band. This
Preamplifier has the option of being powered via the coaxial cable,
& is very suitable for retrofitting inside older transceivers
to improve the weak signal gain. A
low cost BF998 MesFET has been used as it has very good characteristics
on the VHF to UHF bands. The BF988 was specifically designed for
television tuners & has a low <1dB NF @ 800MHz, along with
high cross modulation performance.

The
Preamplifier has been designed to be relatively easy to construct,
& uses conventional components & only one SMD device. The pre amp
can be centre frequency tuned from 40 to 60MHz, & is suitable
for the 6M 50 - 54MHz Amateur band, & also suitable for low
Band TV DX. The Pre amp uses a low cost BF998R MesFET, which has
good strong signal handing characteristics. The design incorporates
RF changeover Relays & power supply decoupling so that power
can be fed via the coaxial cable. It is simple to tune, &
does not have any instability problems due to the use of a wide band
output matching circuit. The Basic EME157 Kits include, PC board
& all on board components, requires box, connectors, &
miscellaneous hardware to complete.

This
amplifier is a simple broadband design which can be used as a
gain block in a receiver or transmitter design, or as a simple preamplifier in the front of a scanning or television receiver to improve signals. A Gali-39
MMIC, ( Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit ) is used as it
has a low noise figure, medium gain, & good strong signal
